Kilimanjaro. The path follows a ridge between two deep valleys up through the dense montane forest. The camp is perched between huge trees and thick undergrowth. It is a gentle walk east toward Kibo\u2019s glaciered peak, across the plateau which leads to Shira 2 camp on moorland meadows by a stream. Then we continue to Moir Hut, a little-used site on the base of Lent Hills. A variety of walks are available on Lent Hills making this an excellent acclimatization opportunity.<\/p>\n<p><em>Shira is one of the highest plateaus on earth. (3,840 m): 4-5 hours walking.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Elevation: 3504m\/11,496ft to 3895m\/12,779ft Altitude gained: 391m<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Day 3: Shira Hut &#8211; Lava Tower &#8211; Baranco Camp<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Although you end the day around the same elevation as when you began, this day is very important for acclimatization. From Shira Plateau we continue east up a ridge, passing the junction towards the Kibo peak before we then continue, South East towards the Lava Tower, called the \u201cShark\u2019s Tooth\u201d (elev. 4650m\/15,250ft). Shortly after the tower, we come to a second junction, which leads to the Arrow Glacier. We then continue to descend to overnight at Barranco Camp.<\/p>\n<p><em>Shira Camp to Barranco Valley: (5-7 hours walking)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Elevation: 3895m\/12,779ft to 3986m\/13,077ft Altitude gained: 91m<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Day 4: Barranco Camp &#8211; Karanga Camp<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A steep climb up the eastern wall leads us just below the Heim Glacier, where we may have some spectacular views of Kilimanjaro. The remainder of the day is spent relaxing in preparation for the final ascent before a very early night.<\/p>\n<p><em>Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp: 3-4 hours walking.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Elevation: 4034m\/13,253ft to 4662m\/15,295ft Altitude gained: 628m<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Day 6 : Barafu Camp &#8211; Summit &#8211; Mweka Camp<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Wake up before midnight in the cover of darkness. As the weather is drastically warmer, the terrain is wet, muddy, and steep and we highly recommend Gaiters and trekking poles.<\/p>\n<p>From the gate, a vehicle will meet you at Mweka village to drive you back to your hotel in Arusha, Moshi. As one of the newer and most highly regarded routes, it treats you to nearly 360-degree panoramic views, including the serene and seldom-explored northern slopes.<\/p>\n<p>Starting from the west, this is the only trail that circles the mountain\u2019s northern side, allowing for a truly unique experience. With ample time for acclimatization and the highest summit success rate of any Kilimanjaro route, the Northern Circuit is ideal for those seeking both beauty and success.<\/p>\n<p>Its remote northern face, with almost no crowds, offers a tranquil and scenic ascent, making it the most picturesque and rewarding path to Uhuru Peak. If you\u2019re looking for an unforgettable and quieter Kilimanjaro experience, this route is your perfect choice.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Day 1: Lemosho &#8211; Lemosho Forest camp<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After breakfast Arusha\/ Moshi, we will drive to Lemosho Gate. Here you will be registered by the national park authorities and your trek through a dense rainforest begins. Today will be the shortest walk of the trek, about 2\u00bd hours, giving you a small taste of what lies ahead in the coming days. The walk takes you through dense and unspoiled rainforest, which is very different from the scenery you will have in the next couple of days.<\/p>\n<p><em>Your destination for the day is the beautiful Big Tree Camp at2780 m (Swahili Mti Mkubwa). (3-4 hrs Walking)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Elevation: 2100m\/6890ft to 2785m\/9137ft Altitude gained: 685m<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Day 2: Lemosho Forest Camp &#8211; Shira Camp<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We soon leave the forest behind and enter the moorland zone of giant heather. The trail climbs steadily with wide views to reach the rim of the Shira Plateau. There is a tangible sense of wilderness, especially if afternoon mists come in! We camp in the center of the plateau at Shira One. 4-6hrs Walking)<\/p>\n<p><em>Elevation: 2785m\/9137ft to 3504m\/11,496ft Altitude gained: 719m<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Day 3: Shira Camp &#8211; Shira Camp II<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Today we explore the grassy moorland and volcanic rock formations of the plateau. We walk to the summit of Shira Cathedral (12,800 ft), a huge buttress of rock surrounded by steep spires and pinnacles. There is a tangible sense of wilderness here, especially when the afternoon mists roll in.<\/p>\n<p><em>From our camp near Shira Hut (12,600 ft), we take in the unforgettable views of Mt. Meru as she floats among the clouds. (3-4hrs Walking)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Elevation: 3504m\/11,496ft to 3895m\/12,779ft Altitude gained: 391m<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Day 4: Shira Camp II &#8211; Lava Tower &#8211; Moir Camp<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span>In\u00a0<\/span>the morning we follow the main trail up to Lava Tower (15,150 ft), and for those feeling strong, there is a possibility to climb up to the ruined hut at Arrow Glacier (15,700 ft). We then continue from Lava Tower to reach our campsite at Moir Hut.(6-7hrs Walking)<\/p>\n<p>For those wanting some extra exercise and acclimatization, there are a number of short hikes that can be taken in the nearby Lent Hills.<\/p>\n<p><em>Elevation: 3895m\/12,779ft to 3986m\/13,077ft Altitude gained: 91m<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Day 5 : Moir Camp &#8211; Buffalo Camp<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We climb out of the Moir Valley and take a short detour to reach the summit of Lent Hills (15,400 ft). After admiring the views we return to the trail and head eastwards around the northern circuit trail. Here the trail passes through a field of rock slabs that clink as they are walked on. The final section of today\u2019s walk undulates until reaching the location of Buffalo Camp.<\/p>\n<p><em>At the camp, there is a huge feeling of space as the Kenyan plains stretch out far below to the north. (5-7hrs Walking)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Elevation: 4155m\/13,632ft to 4033m\/13,232ft Altitude loss: 122m<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Day 6 : Buffalo Camp &#8211; Rongai 3rd Cave<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll begin your day by heading up Buffalo Ridge. This is truly wild country, as you\u2019ll feel like the only people on the mountain as you trek through this sparse terrain. Trekking through remote valleys and windswept terrain, you\u2019ll overnight on the northern slopes of Kilimanjaro.<\/p>\n<p><em>Elevation: 13,200 ft to 12,700 ft, Distance: 8 km\/5 miles, Hiking Time: 5-7 hours<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Day 7 : Rongai 3rd Cave &#8211; School Hut<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There is a steady ascent to reach the saddle, a lunar landscape between the peaks of Kibo and Mawenzi. From here we continue upwards and reach School Hut in the early afternoon.<\/p>\n<p><em>The remainder of the afternoon is spent resting and preparing for the summit day. (4-6hrs Walking)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Elevation: 3936m\/12,913ft to 4717m\/15,476ft Altitude gained: 781m<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Day 8 : School Hut &#8211; Summit &#8211; Mweka Camp<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We start the final and most demanding part of the climb by headlamp around 1 a.m. We plod very slowly in the darkness on a switchback trail through loose volcanic scree to reach the crater rim at Gilman\u2019s Point (18,600 ft). We rest here for a short time to enjoy the spectacular sunrise over Mawenzi. Those who are still feeling strong can make the three- our round trip to Uhuru Peak (19,345 ft), passing close to the spectacular glaciers and ice cliffs that still occupy most of the summit area. We leave the summit heading northwest, down steep switchbacks for a short distance to Crater Camp (18,900 ft), where the rest of the crew will join us to set up camp. There is an option to hike Reusch Crater and the Ash Pit (19,140), or stay in the area and explore Furtwangler Glacier. Sleeping at this high altitude can be dangerous. Serious AMS can develop if adequate altitude acclimatization has not been achieved so the guides will monitor you very closely later descend to Mweka Camp. We continue the descent down to the Mweka Park Gate to receive your summit certificates. As the weather is drastically warmer, the terrain is wet, muddy, and steep and we highly recommend Gaiters and trekking poles.<\/p>\n<p>From the gate, a vehicle will meet you at Mweka village to drive you back to your hotel in Arusha, Moshi. Those who are still feeling strong can make the three- our round trip to Uhuru Peak (19,345 ft), passing close to the spectacular glaciers and ice cliffs that still occupy most of the summit area. We leave the summit heading northwest, down steep switchbacks for a short distance to Crater Camp (18,900 ft), where the rest of the crew will join us to set up camp. Met voldoende tijd voor acclimatisatie en het hoogste slagingspercentage van alle Kilimanjaro-routes is de Northern Circuit ideaal voor diegenen die zowel schoonheid als succes zoeken.<\\\/p>\\n\n\n<p>De afgelegen noordelijke zijde, met bijna geen andere klimmers, biedt een rustige en schilderachtige klim en maakt het de meest pittoreske en lonende weg naar Uhuru Peak. Als je op zoek bent naar een onvergetelijke en rustigere Kilimanjaro-ervaring, is deze route de perfecte keuze.<\\\/p>\\n\n\n<div>\\n\n\n<p><strong>Dag 1: Lemosho - Lemosho Forest Camp<\\\/strong><br \\\/>Na het ontbijt in Arusha\\\/Moshi rijden we naar de Lemosho Gate. Hier word je geregistreerd door de nationale parkautoriteiten en begint je trektocht door een dicht regenwoud. Vandaag is de kortste wandeldag van de trek, ongeveer 2\\u00bd uur, wat je een kleine indruk geeft van wat je de komende dagen te wachten staat. De wandeling voert je door ongerept regenwoud, heel anders dan het landschap dat je in de volgende dagen zult tegenkomen.<\\\/p>\\n\n\n<p>Je bestemming voor de dag is het prachtige Big Tree Camp op 2780 m (Swahili: Mti Mkubwa). Het pad stijgt geleidelijk met een weids uitzicht en bereikt de rand van het Shira Plateau. Er heerst een voelbaar gevoel van wildernis, vooral als de middagmist binnenkomt! We kamperen in het midden van het plateau bij Shira One. (4-6 uur wandelen)<\\\/p>\\n\n\n<p>Hoogte: 2785m\\\/9137ft naar 3504m\\\/11,496ft<br \\\/>Hoogtewinst: 719m<\\\/p>\\n\n\n<p><strong>Dag 3: Shira Camp - Shira Camp II<\\\/strong><br \\\/>Vandaag verkennen we het grasland en de vulkanische rotsformaties van het plateau. We wandelen naar de top van de Shira Cathedral (12,800 ft), een enorme rotswand omgeven door steile pieken en torens. Het gevoel van wildernis is hier intens, vooral als de middagmist verschijnt.<\\\/p>\\n\n\n<p>Vanaf ons kamp bij de Shira Hut (12,600 ft) genieten we van het onvergetelijke uitzicht op Mt. Meru, zwevend tussen de wolken. (3-4 uur wandelen)<\\\/p>\\n\n\n<p>Hoogte: 3504m\\\/11,496ft naar 3895m\\\/12,779ft<br \\\/>Hoogtewinst: 391m<\\\/p>\\n\n\n<p><strong>Dag 4: Shira Camp II - Lava Tower - Moir Camp<\\\/strong><br \\\/>In de ochtend volgen we het hoofdpad omhoog naar Lava Tower (15,150 ft). Voor de sterken onder ons is er een mogelijkheid om naar de Arrow Glacier Hut (15,700 ft) te klimmen. We vervolgen onze tocht vanaf Lava Tower naar ons kamp bij Moir Hut. (6-7 uur wandelen)<\\\/p>\\n\n\n<p>Voor extra oefening en acclimatisatie kunnen er korte wandelingen worden gemaakt in de nabijgelegen Lent Hills.<\\\/p>\\n\n\n<p>Hoogte: 3895m\\\/12,779ft naar 3986m\\\/13,077ft<br \\\/>Hoogtewinst: 91m<\\\/p>\\n\n\n<p><strong>Dag 5: Moir Camp - Buffalo Camp<\\\/strong><br \\\/>We klimmen uit de Moir Valley en maken een korte omweg naar de top van de Lent Hills (15,400 ft). Na het bewonderen van het uitzicht keren we terug naar het pad en gaan oostwaarts over de noordelijke circuit trail. Hier passeert het pad een veld van rotsplaten die een klinkend geluid maken wanneer erop wordt gelopen. Het laatste deel van de wandeling golft zachtjes totdat we Buffalo Camp bereiken.<\\\/p>\\n\n\n<p>Bij het kamp is er een enorm gevoel van ruimte, met de Keniaanse vlaktes die zich ver onder je uitstrekken naar het noorden. Dit is echt ongerepte natuur; je hebt het gevoel dat je de enige mensen op de berg bent terwijl je door dit ruige terrein trekt. Na het wandelen door afgelegen valleien en door de wind geteisterde landschappen overnacht je op de noordelijke hellingen van Kilimanjaro.<\\\/p>\\n\n\n<p>Hoogte: 13,200 ft naar 12,700 ft<br \\\/>Afstand: 8 km\\\/5 mijl<br \\\/>Wandeltijd: 5-7 uur<\\\/p>\\n\n\n<p><strong>Dag 7: Rongai 3e Grot - School Hut<\\\/strong><br \\\/>We maken een geleidelijke klim naar de saddle, een maanlandschap tussen de pieken van Kibo en Mawenzi. Vanaf hier gaan we verder omhoog en bereiken we School Hut in de vroege namiddag. De rest van de middag wordt besteed aan rusten en voorbereiden op de topdag. Heel langzaam ploeteren we in het donker via een slingerpad door losse vulkanische as naar de kraterrand bij Gilman\\u2019s Point (18,600 ft). Hier rusten we kort om van de spectaculaire zonsopgang boven Mawenzi te genieten. Degenen die zich nog sterk voelen, kunnen de drie uur durende tocht naar Uhuru Peak (19,345 ft) maken. Daarna dalen we af naar Mweka Camp.
